Downtown
Downtown Houston is bordered by I-45, I-10 and the 59 freeway. It's the largest business district in the city and home to the headquarters of many prominent companies. There's an extensive network of skywalks connecting buildings, and 6.3 miles of underground pedestrian tunnels where you have access to everything you could possibly need during your work day - newsstands, coffee shops, restaurants, salons, shops and even dry cleaners.
The downtown district is the true "center" of the city. Since 1999, there's been a massive effort to ensure it's continued growth. This impressive revitalization effort has spurred loads of new commercial development, including a light rail system, Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, and the Downtown Aquarium.
Catch a live stage performance of almost any type in Houston's renowned 17-block Theater District. Houston is one of only a handful of U.S. cities with permanent professional resident companies in opera (Houston Grand Opera), ballet (Houston Ballet), music (Houston Symphony) and theater (Alley Theatre), so there are plenty of options.
The open-air Houston Pavilions debuted in 2008 with Jay-Z's hot performance at the House of Blues. The concert scene shares the venue with trendy shopping havens including BCBG and a Forever 21 flagship. There are luxury hotels galore and virtually countless world-class restaurants, including Artista, Quattro (at the Four Season's Hotel), VOICE (at the Hotel Icon), Bistro Lancaster (Lancaster Hotel), *17 at the Alden-Houston Hotel, Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse, and Morton's - The Steakhouse, among many others.
Downtown revitalization sparked the transformation of many old hotels and factories into exciting new loft dwellings available for lease. Beautiful high- and mid-rise apartments and lofts with spacious open floor plans, some of which include exposed duct work, hardwoods and brick work, provide the perfect backdrop for a pulsating downtown lifestyle.
